17 soldiers killed, bandits neutralized during gun battle in Niger State

A joint operation between the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force successfully thwarted a terrorist incursion into Bangi community in Niger State’s Mariga Local Government Area on June 24, 2025.

The operation, based on credible intelligence, led to a intense gun battle between troops and approximately 300 armed bandits in Kwanar Dutse Forest.

The Acting Director Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Lt. Col. Anele said the bandits had planned to launch coordinated attacks on surrounding communities or seek refuge in Kwatankoro Forest to evade military pressure from operations in Zamfara State. However, their plans were disrupted by troops who engaged them in a fierce firefight lasting over three hours.

She said: “The Nigerian Air Force conducted precision airstrikes on the terrorists’ withdrawal routes, delivering accurate heavy bombardments on identified locations.

“Although the exact number of casualties couldn’t be ascertained, multiple blood trails along their escape routes suggest significant enemy losses.

She said further operations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage inflicted on the terrorists.

“Regrettably, 17 brave soldiers lost their lives during the encounter, while 10 others sustained injuries.

“The wounded personnel have been evacuated to a military medical facility and are receiving treatment in stable condition”, Lt. Col. Anele said.

She quoted The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Oluwafemi Oluyede, as extending his condolences to the families of the fallen heroes, directing military medical teams to provide the best possible care for the injured troops.

The army spokesperson said the Nigerian Army remains resolute in its mission to secure communities and protect lives and property across the nation.

According to her, Lieutenant General Oluyede emphasized the army’s commitment to ending terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality plaguing the society.

The army urged the public to continue supporting counter-terrorism efforts by providing timely information to security agencies.
