Former presidential candidate Peter Obi delivered an inspiring call to action at the National Youth Rally celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON) at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Awka, hosted by the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province.
Addressing thousands of young Nigerians, Obi urged the youth to take charge of the nation’s future by electing competent and principled leaders.
Speaking passionately, Obi emphasized the critical role of youths in nation-building, stating, “The task of building a better Nigeria rests on your shoulders.” He highlighted Nigeria’s challenges, including hunger, insecurity, and poor governance, despite the nation’s abundant resources.
Obi warned that the true disaster lies not in aspiring to leadership but in leaders lacking the courage and integrity to drive progress. “We cannot continue on a path where leaders trade in lies while citizens go hungry,” he said.
In a direct appeal to young Nigerians, especially those turning 18, Obi stressed the power of the voter’s card as a tool to combat bad leadership.
“Your voter’s card is your most powerful weapon,” he declared, urging them not to sell their votes. “Once you do, you have also sold your healthcare, your education, and your future.” His message underscored the importance of civic engagement in shaping a prosperous Nigeria.
Obi expressed gratitude to Rev. Fr. Paschal Udo, the clergy, CYON leadership, and the youths for their commitment to change. He praised the growing resolve among Nigerian youths, noting, “They are no longer content with complaints—they are ready for action.”
Closing with his signature optimism, Obi affirmed, “A New Nigeria is POssible,” inspiring hope for a transformed nation driven by honest and determined leadership.
The rally, attended by thousands, highlighted the pivotal role of Nigeria’s youth in the nation’s future, with Obi’s words igniting a renewed sense of purpose and civic responsibility.
