Former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has formally revalidated his membership in the party, urging Nigerians and opposition groups to unite in confronting what he described as bad governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed this in a post on his X handle following a membership validation exercise held in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on March 8.
According to him, the move was part of a broader effort to strengthen the party and mobilise Nigerians committed to political renewal and responsible leadership.
The former Anambra State governor recalled that the groundwork for the initiative began late last year when prominent figures from across the South-East gathered in Enugu to deliberate on the region’s political direction.
“On the 31st of December, leading figures from across Igboland gathered in Enugu in a historic meeting of the ‘who is who’ in the region. The purpose was clear: to call on Igbo leaders, intellectuals, and stakeholders to join the ADC as the most credible platform for political renewal and responsible governance,” Obi wrote.
He noted that the meeting brought together influential political leaders from the five South-East states, reflecting what he described as a shared resolve for collective action.
Among those present were former governor of Enugu State, Okwesilieze Nwodo; former senator Gilbert Nnaji; former governor of Imo State Achike Udenwa; former Imo governor Emeka Ihedioha; and senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.
Others included former senator Ben Ndi Obi, Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye, alongside several members of the National Assembly and state legislatures.
Obi said their presence “underscored a shared conviction that the South-East must work together with a united voice and common purpose.”
Membership Validation Flag-Off in Awka
He added that the follow-up gathering held on March 8 in Awka marked the formal flag-off of the party’s membership validation and registration exercise.
“Yesterday, the 8th of March, we once again gathered in Awka to formally flag off the membership validation and registration exercise. The event also attracted a wide spectrum of leaders and stakeholders, including 2 Senators, 5 members of the National Assembly, 6 members of the State Houses of Assembly, and a host of dignitaries,” Obi stated.
During the event, he called on opposition parties across the country to close ranks in order to challenge the prevailing governance situation.
“Speaking during the event, I urged all opposition parties to come together in the determination to confront and end bad governance. The forthcoming election in 2027 will not merely be a contest between political parties; it will be a defining choice between the Nigerian people and bad governance,” he said.
After the flag-off ceremony, Obi said he proceeded to his hometown to complete his own membership validation as a demonstration of commitment to the party’s internal processes.
“Following the flag-off ceremony in Awka, we moved to Agulu, where I personally completed my membership validation and encouraged others to follow suit. Our message is simple, meaningful change begins with participation,” he added.
The former presidential candidate concluded his message with a note of optimism about Nigeria’s future.
“The journey toward a New Nigeria that is POssible continues.”
