2027: Sanwo-Olu endorses his Deputy, Hamzat for Lagos governorship race

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has publicly endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, following the latter’s formal declaration of interest in the 2027 governorship race.

The governor disclosed this on Monday after receiving Hamzat, who officially informed him of his intention to contest for the state’s top seat. Sanwo-Olu described the development as a significant step, noting that their long-standing working relationship has given him deep insight into Hamzat’s leadership qualities.

“Today, I received my Deputy, @drobafemihamzat, as he formally shared his intention to run for Governor of Lagos State,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Reflecting on their years of collaboration, the governor emphasized the strength of their partnership and Hamzat’s dedication to public service. “We have worked closely for over 21 years and I know his strength, his capabilities and his steady commitment to the people of Lagos,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu further credited Hamzat’s experience in governance and policy development, linking it to the political mentorship of Bola Tinubu. According to him, this background positions the deputy governor as a capable successor.

“Femi’s understanding of governance and the socio-economic development of the State as nurtured by our leader, HE President Bola Tinubu, makes him, undoubtedly the best man for the job,” the governor stated.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Lagos, Sanwo-Olu cautioned against political uncertainty, insisting continuity remains vital for sustained growth.

“Lagos is too important to be left for experimenting. I, therefore have no doubt that with his values, he will continue to work tirelessly to make our state greater,” he said.

In his response, Hamzat expressed gratitude for the endorsement, describing it as an honour. He pledged to build on the achievements of the current administration while prioritising development and improved living standards for residents.

The deputy governor also reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining Lagos’ growth trajectory, promising inclusive governance and people-focused policies if elected.

Hamzat’s declaration is expected to shape early political conversations ahead of the next electoral cycle in Lagos, as stakeholders begin to assess potential contenders for one of Nigeria’s most influential governorship positions.
