32 arrested as police raid cultists hideout, recover firearms, ammunition and drugs

Delta State Police Command has recorded another major breakthrough in its ongoing campaign against cultism, arresting thirty-two suspected cultists and recovering firearms, ammunition, communication equipment and illicit drugs in separate intelligence-led operations.

Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, said the operations were carried out by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit and the Command Anti-Cultism Unit following credible intelligence on the activities of suspected cult groups in different parts of the state.

Acting on credible intelligence in the early hours of June 16, 2026, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit stormed a suspected cult initiation ground in Agbarho.

He said: “Police intelligence indicated that members of the Eiye Confraternity, allegedly linked to recent cult-related killings in Agbor, were planning further acts of violence and the initiation of new members.

“On arrival at the location, the operatives came under gunfire from some of the suspects. The officers responded professionally, leading to an exchange during which two suspects sustained gunshot injuries.

SP Edafe said the operation led to the arrest of twenty-five suspects, while several others escaped.

He said items recovered from the scene included one pump-action shotgun and one cut-to-size firearm.

According to him, the injured suspects are currently receiving medical treatment, while investigations continue.

In a related operation, operatives of the Command Anti-Cultism Unit, acting on credible intelligence, raided a suspected criminal hideout at Azagba-Ogwashi on June 14, 2026.

SP Edafe said the raid resulted in the arrest of seven suspected cultists identified as Obore Ndubrisi, Okafor Okene, Odinigie Sunday, Okohur Destiny, Felix Abraham, Aputa Israel and Okolie Chinonso Peter.

He said recovered exhibits include one double-barrel gun, two live cartridges, quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp and Tramadol, as well as a walkie-talkie.

He said the suspects and exhibits are currently in police custody, while profiling and further investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has commended the gallantry and professionalism displayed by the operatives involved in the successful operations.

The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating cultism, violent crime and all forms of criminality across Delta State.
