Nigerian singer Omah Lay has got people talking after making a bold call about where he stands in the game, with clips from the interview already trending since early noon on Wednesday.
Speaking during an interview on Nandoleaks, the “Soso” crooner didn’t try to play it safe.
“When it comes to art and making music, I’m the best of the last 20 years. The only person that sometimes I put myself with is Burna Boy.”
It’s a heavy statement, especially in a scene that’s seen wave after wave of stars over the years.
Omah Lay only really broke into the mainstream around 2020, but in that short time, he’s carved out his own lane, moody, reflective, and very personal. That said, putting himself right at the very top, and with just Burna Boy for company, is the kind of talk that will always get people arguing.
He didn’t stop there. The singer admitted he has a lot of pride and ego, something he believes is quite common across the Afrobeats space. Still, he was quick to balance that, describing himself simply as “a chill guy.”
There were more personal moments in the interview too. He spoke about how he tends to lose himself whenever he falls in love, saying anything he truly connects with, he gives himself fully to it, “to die for,” as he put it.
On the music side, there was also a bit of news. He revealed he has signed a new artist, Elmah, someone he says he genuinely believes in. She becomes the first act under his label, Boy Alone.
Both of them have already worked together on “Coping Mechanism,” a track expected to make his upcoming album Clarity of Mind.
And in typical fashion, he didn’t hold back about that project either. Omah Lay went as far as calling it the greatest Afrobeats album of all time, urging fans to anticipate what’s coming.
As expected, reactions didn’t take long to roll in.
Some fans backed him straight up. “He is who he says he is,” one person wrote.
Others weren’t having it. “Omo na 2019 you start your career oo,” another replied, questioning how he stretches that claim across two decades.
“Werey dey do promotions for e album,” someone else added.
Still, a few listeners pointed to what makes him stand out. “No lies told, his style is different,” one comment read.
At the end of the day, it’s bold, maybe even a bit wild, but it has people talking. And with it already making rounds before the day even settled, you can tell this one isn’t going away anytime soon.
