Hosts, Team Delta, on Friday climbed to second position on the medals table of the 9th National Youth Games, overtaking Team Edo in the process.
Delta achieved the feat after winning three gold medals in athletics to equal Team Edo’s tally of 30 gold medals.
The defending champions overtook Team Edo with a superior number of silver medals, moving them ahead in the standings.
As of late Friday, Team Delta had 30 gold, 32 silver, and 30 bronze medals. Team Edo slipped to third with 30 gold, 12 silver, and 20 bronze.
Surprise contenders Team Kwara moved into fourth place, overtaking Team Abia with 14 gold, eight silver, and 11 bronze medals.
Team Abia dropped to fifth position with 13 gold, 12 silver, and 10 bronze medals.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Team Lagos maintained top spot with 39 gold, 23 silver, and 17 bronze medals.
The 9th National Youth Games will end on Saturday, with Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, expected at the closing.
The closing ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, will follow the men’s and women’s 4×100 metres relay finals. (NAN)
