A wave of relief swept across Nigeria on Sunday as the Federal Government confirmed the rescue of the remaining pupils and staff abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, bringing a painful chapter to a hopeful close.

In a statement signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government announced that all 230 abducted pupils have now regained their freedom, with no child left behind.

“As it is, the Federal Government can confirm that all the abducted pupils of the Catholic School, Papiri, numbering 230, have been freed. Not a single pupil is left in captivity,” the statement said.

The latest release involved 130 pupils, who are currently being handed over to the Niger State Government ahead of their reunion with families who have endured weeks of fear, anxiety and unanswered prayers.

The rescue, achieved through sustained security operations, has been described as a moment of triumph and national relief, especially as the year draws to a close.

“This courageous effort by our security forces reaffirms our nation’s resolve to protect its people,” the Federal Government noted, commending the dedication and bravery of personnel involved in the operation.

Beyond the celebration of freedom, the government also acknowledged the emotional toll the abduction took on families and communities, extending heartfelt words of empathy and goodwill.

“The Federal Government empathizes with the parents and guardians of the pupils for the agony the abduction has caused them, wishes them a pleasant family reunion, a good healing process, compliments of the season and a Merry Christmas,” the statement added.

For the families in Papiri, this Christmas arrives with renewed hope, tears of joy and the priceless gift of reunion — a reminder that, even in dark moments, perseverance and collective resolve can restore light.
