The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed as unfounded and misleading reports suggesting a possible replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima as running mate to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party said it had observed a growing media frenzy around the issue, noting that the speculation had recently escalated to the point where specific individuals were being named as potential replacements for the Vice President.
Morka described the reports as “purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless,” urging media organisations to exercise restraint and professionalism by refusing to amplify what he called rumours peddled by “mischievous news sources of questionable provenance.”
According to the APC spokesman, such narratives are designed to create discord and confusion within the polity and do not reflect the position or priorities of the party.
He emphasised that, under existing laws and electoral regulations, the ban on political activities remains in force, stressing that the APC is not engaged in discussions or manoeuvres related to the 2027 elections at this time.
“At this time, our party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Morka said, adding that the government is concentrating on entrenching reforms aimed at transforming the economy, building prosperity and improving the living conditions of Nigerians.
The party also cautioned its ministers, senior government officials and party leaders against making comments or taking actions that could fuel unnecessary speculation.
Morka urged them to concentrate on their primary responsibility of diligent service to both government and party, while working to strengthen public confidence in the administration’s achievements under President Tinubu’s leadership.
He reiterated the APC’s commitment to unity, discipline and responsible communication as the government continues to pursue its reform agenda.
