Army Chief honoured with prestigious traditional title of “Omu Udo I of Ebonyi”

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has been conferred with the prestigious traditional title of “Omu Udo I of Ebonyi” by the Ebonyi State Council of Chiefs, in recognition of his exemplary leadership and significant contributions to peace, security and national development.

The investiture ceremony, held on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, on the sidelines of the Passing Out Parade of the 90 Regular Recruit Intake at Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri-Edda, highlighted the vital role of traditional institutions in supporting national security efforts through a whole-of-society approach.

The event, which brought together senior government officials, traditional rulers and military officers, underscored the growing collaboration between the Nigerian Army, state authorities and community leaders in promoting sustainable peace, strengthening civil-military relations and fostering shared responsibility for national security.

Presenting the honour, the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, described the COAS as “a proud son of the soil,” noting that the title reflects the deep appreciation of the people of Ebonyi State for his dedication to national service and his unwavering commitment to the security and development of the state.

Governor Nwifuru further highlighted the establishment of the Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri-Edda, as a landmark achievement under Lieutenant General Shaibu’s leadership. He noted that the institution has not only strengthened security but also stimulated socio-economic growth and enhanced Ebonyi State’s contribution to national defence through manpower development.

Reaffirming the state’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with the Nigerian Army and other stakeholders, the Governor emphasised that continued collaboration remains essential to building a peaceful, secure and prosperous nation. He added that the people of Ebonyi State remain grateful for the COAS’s enduring legacy of service, peace and development.
