Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called for the encouragement and empowerment of Nigerian women to ensure their full participation in governance.

Abubakar made this statement on Friday in Abuja, marking the 2025 International Women’s Day.

He expressed concern that, in spite of living in a democratic society, efforts to silence women’s voices in leadership continue.

He cited the recent suspension of Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP-Kogi) as a concerning example of such suppression.

Abubakar argued that the suspension undermines fairness, representation, and gender inclusivity in governance.

“Women must be encouraged and empowered to participate fully in governance, not silenced when they take leadership roles,” he stated.

He also praised Nigerian women for their resilience, hard work, and courage, calling them the backbone of society.

Abubakar highlighted the vital roles women play in homes, workplaces, and governance, noting their immeasurable contributions to nation-building.

“On this International Women’s Day 2025, I reaffirm my commitment to advancing, including, and protecting women’s rights in Nigeria.

“A nation can only progress when its women are given the space and opportunity to thrive,” Abubakar added.
