AU warns of renewed escalation in Gulf region as Iran drone strikes threaten UAE, oil route

Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expresses deep concern over the renewed escalation in the Gulf region, marked by the resumption of drone and missile attacks attributed to Iran against neighbouring states, including the United Arab Emirates, as well as the continued disruption of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

Youssouf in a system on Tuesday, said these developments risk further destabilizing the region and have direct and serious repercussions on global energy markets.

He said: “For African economies, the consequences are immediate, with rising fuel prices, increased inflationary pressures, and heightened economic vulnerability.

The AU Chairperson called for immediate de-escalation, the cessation of attacks against sovereign states, and full respect for freedom of navigation in accordance with international law. He further urges all parties to prioritize dialogue and diplomatic solutions.

He reaffirms the African Union’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and underscores the need to mitigate the economic impact of this crisis on African countries.
