FAAN, military, police nab 4 suspected bandits near Akure airport Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed the arrest of four suspected bandits within the vicinity of Akure Airport in Akure, Ondo State, following a coordinated operation involving aviation and local security agencies. According to FAAN, the suspects were apprehended on Monday after security operatives responded to a distress alert reporting the presence of suspicious individuals behind the airport perimeter close to the Eleyewo community. In a statement issued by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority said the alert prompted an immediate joint security response involving several agencies. Security personnel drawn from FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force, alongside local security groups, launched a coordinated search operation around the affected area. During the operation, some of the suspects reportedly attempted to escape but were eventually captured. “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the public that four suspected bandits were today apprehended within the vicinity of Akure Airport, Ondo State, following a coordinated security operation involving aviation and local security agencies,” the statement said. It added that the suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation. “Four suspects were eventually apprehended by the joint security team and have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation,” the statement noted. FAAN commended the collaboration among security agencies and community-based groups whose combined efforts led to the arrests. “FAAN commends the swift collaboration among aviation security personnel, the military, the police, and local security groups, including Amotekun and community vigilantes, whose joint efforts led to the arrest,” the authority stated. The agency said the incident underscores the need for stronger airport perimeter protection across the country. According to FAAN, the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and with the backing of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is accelerating the installation of modern perimeter fencing and other security infrastructure at airports nationwide. “Work has already commenced in phases to ensure that airports under FAAN are better secured against unlawful access and other security threats,” the statement added. The authority also reassured passengers and airport host communities of its commitment to safeguarding aviation facilities across Nigeria.
