BREAKING: Atiku Abubakar Resigns from PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a party he helped found, citing irreconcilable differences with its current direction.

The resignation, announced in a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, marks the end of an era for the veteran politician and sets the stage for his rumored ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In his heartfelt letter, Atiku expressed gratitude for the opportunities the PDP provided during his storied career.

“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he wrote.

However, he lamented the party’s shift away from its core values, stating, “I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

The resignation comes amid growing speculation about Atiku’s political future. Sources close to the former vice president indicate that he is preparing to join the ADC, a move seen as a strategic step toward his ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election. Political analysts suggest that Atiku’s exit from the PDP, where he was a two-time presidential candidate, reflects his intent to consolidate support under a new platform that aligns with his vision for Nigeria.

“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku wrote, underscoring the emotional weight of his departure. Despite the split, he extended well-wishes to the PDP, noting, “I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future.”
