Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the need for strategic political realignment in response to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
In a press statement released on Sunday, the former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate announced that his resignation takes immediate effect, describing the decision as difficult but necessary.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso stated.
The leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement expressed appreciation to the party leadership and members for the opportunity to serve as National Leader and presidential flagbearer during the 2023 general elections.
“I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections. As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he said.
Kwankwaso explained that his departure was driven by the need to reposition politically in order to better pursue national development objectives.
“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he added.
The former governor also acknowledged the support he received from the party’s leadership and stakeholders during his time in the NNPP.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time. I also thank the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party — from the ward to the state level, as well as the legacy members of the party and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to our shared mission,” the statement read.
Despite his resignation, Kwankwaso indicated that collaboration with party members and supporters would continue in pursuit of national progress.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he concluded.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with observers expecting Kwankwaso’s next political move to significantly shape the opposition landscape.
