Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ordered the Super Falcons’ technical crew to step down with immediate effect, signalling the first major fallout from Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The NFF Executive Committee announced the decision in a post on its X handle on Monday, directing the technical crew of the senior women’s national team to vacate their positions immediately.
The federation did not, however, name the individuals affected by the order or announce who will take charge of the Falcons next.
The decision comes shortly after the Falcons’ WAFCON campaign ended with a setback that went beyond losing the African title. The tournament in Morocco also served as Africa’s qualification route for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with only the four semi-finalists guaranteed automatic tickets. The losing quarter-finalists were left to fight for the remaining opportunities through the play-off route.
That meant the pressure on Nigeria was unusually high from the start.
The Falcons arrived in Morocco as the reigning African champions and the most successful team in WAFCON history, having won the competition 10 times. They were chasing an 11th title while also trying to secure Nigeria’s place at another World Cup.
Instead, the campaign fell short of those expectations, leaving the NFF with difficult questions to answer.
Monday’s directive now provides the clearest indication yet that the federation is not prepared to simply move on from the disappointment.
The bigger question is what comes next.
With Nigeria’s World Cup hopes still alive through the remaining qualification route, the NFF has little room for a long transition. A new technical setup will have to settle quickly, restore confidence around the team and prepare the Falcons for matches that could determine whether their remarkable presence at every Women’s World Cup since the competition began will continue.
That history is part of what makes the latest decision significant.
