The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the death of former military spokesman, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd), who was killed while in the custody of his abductors.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the military expressed grief over the development and extended condolences to his family, former colleagues and Nigerians mourning his loss.
The late general served the country in several capacities during his military career, including as Director of Defence Information and spokesman for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
According to the Defence Headquarters, he played notable roles in counter-insurgency operations and contributed to the growth and professional development of the military.
The military said it chose not to speak publicly about his abduction while efforts were underway to secure his release, noting that security agencies worked behind the scenes in an attempt to bring him home safely.
Describing the incident as a painful blow, the Defence Headquarters said the killing would not deter the Armed Forces from pursuing those behind terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
It said operations against criminal groups have been stepped up in recent months and would continue until those responsible are arrested and made to face the law.
The military also assured Nigerians that troops remain committed to protecting lives, defending the country’s territorial integrity and restoring security in troubled areas.
Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, conveyed the military’s position in the statement issued on June 13, 2026.
