Coalition Urges Tinubu to Suspend Surveyor General, Seeks Probe Over Alleged Land Transactions

Surveyor General of the Federation, Abuduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin

A coalition of civil society organisations under the umbrella of the Civil Society Alliance Against Corruption and Abuse of Office (CSAACAO) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately suspend and remove the Surveyor General of the Federation over allegations of abuse of office, land-related disputes, administrative misconduct and other actions it says require an independent investigation.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the coalition said the suspension would allow for what it described as a comprehensive, transparent and impartial investigation into the allegations surrounding the office.

According to CSAACAO, it has received petitions and complaints from concerned stakeholders alleging that the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation has been linked to questionable land-related activities in Lagos State, where government authority was allegedly used to interfere in legitimate land ownership matters.

The coalition further disclosed that, according to petitions and information received from various concerned stakeholders, there are allegations that individuals connected to the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation may have participated in activities relating to disputed land transactions in the affected areas.

It also stated that it had received reports alleging that a senior government official may have improperly influenced matters connected with some of the disputed lands, stressing that the claims should be independently investigated by the appropriate authorities.

CSAACAO added that it was aware of reports that a former Governor of Lagos State, who is said to have been affected by the disputed land matters, is considering legal action against the Surveyor General of the Federation.

The coalition said it respected the right of any aggrieved party to seek redress through the courts, noting that the judicial process should be allowed to determine the facts where litigation is commenced.

The group also disclosed that it had received complaints from individuals who identified themselves as members of staff within the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation.

According to the coalition, the complaints reflect growing dissatisfaction among some employees over what they described as poor staff welfare, lack of transparency in administrative processes and an alleged atmosphere of intimidation within the organisation.

The statement said some staff alleged “high handed leadership, lack of transparency in administrative processes, poor staff welfare, and an alleged atmosphere of intimidation that they say has negatively affected staff morale and productivity.”

CSAACAO maintained that the allegations should be independently investigated.

The coalition stressed that public institutions must uphold the highest standards of accountability and integrity.

It stated: “Public institutions are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, accountability, and respect for due process. Any allegation suggesting otherwise deserves urgent and impartial attention from the appropriate authorities.”

The coalition therefore demanded the immediate suspension and subsequent removal of the Surveyor General of the Federation to pave the way for what it described as a comprehensive, transparent and independent investigation into all allegations surrounding his tenure.

It also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and other relevant agencies to investigate allegations relating to abuse of office, questionable land transactions, abuse of administrative powers, financial impropriety and any other unlawful activities that may have been committed.

As part of its campaign for accountability and institutional reforms, CSAACAO announced plans to stage a peaceful protest rally in Abuja on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

According to the coalition, the rally will bring together civil society organisations, anti-corruption advocates, professional bodies and concerned Nigerians to demand transparency, accountability and a thorough investigation into the allegations.

The statement added: “We call on all relevant authorities to act decisively in the interest of justice and the Nigerian people. No public official should be above the law, and every allegation of corruption or abuse of office must be investigated fairly and without prejudice.”

The statement was jointly signed by the National President of CSAACAO, Comrade Solomon Adesina, and the National Secretary, Amb. Fatima Ibrahim.
