COAS undertakes troops’ battlefield assessment in North East, reiterates Army’s resolve to overcome threats

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Friday, 10 April 2026, reaffirmed the determination of the Nigerian Army to defeat all security threats confronting the nation, with the continued support of citizens.

The COAS made this known during an operational visit to Yobe State, where he was received by the State Governor, Alhaji Mai Mala Buni, at the Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport, Damaturu.

The visit according to a statement by the Army’s spokesperson, Col. Appolonia Anele, was aimed at boosting troop morale and conducting a thorough assessment of the current security landscape in the region.

General Shaibu acknowledged recent operational challenges, including attacks on troop positions, but assured that the Nigerian Army remains steadfast and undeterred in carrying out its constitutional mandate.

He noted that ongoing adjustments in operational strategies are being implemented to effectively respond to emerging threats and sustain gains recorded across various theatres.

According to him, despite the evolving nature of security threats nationwide, the Nigerian Army will continue to stand firm and decisively confront all forms of terrorism.

He added that the Army is constantly adapting its approaches to match changing dynamics, while urging state governments to enhance their support for troops engaged in frontline operations.

The COAS also commended the Government and people of Yobe State for their unwavering support, emphasizing that such cooperation is vital to achieving lasting operational success.

While at the Headquarters, Sector 2 Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI in Damaturu, the Executive Governor of Borno State, His Excellency Professor Babagana Zulum, accompanied by Senator Ali Ndume, paid a condolence visit to the Chief of Army Staff and the Nigerian Army over the lost of personnel during recent encounter with terrorists. He pledged to evolve additional strategies in support of security agencies in response to the dynamic nature of the threats.

General Shaibu also interacted with troops of the Sector, where he charged them to remain aggressive and relentless in dealing with terrorists, in honour of fallen comrades and in pursuit of lasting peace and security.

Earlier in his remarks, the Deputy Governor who represented the Executive Governor, applauded the Nigerian Army for its pivotal role in restoring peace in affected parts of the country. He highlighted the Army’s resilience and commitment to duty, noting that despite operational pressures, it has continued to achieve commendable successes. He also offered prayers for the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
