Edo Queens have emerged champions of the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League after defeating Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies on penalties in Saturday’s thrilling final in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The Nigerian champions recovered twice from behind to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw before the match was decided from the spot.
Ampem Darkoa opened the scoring in the second minute through Beline Nyarkoh, but Doosuur Anastasia Atume equalised almost immediately for Edo Queens. Nyarkoh restored the Ghanaian side’s lead in the 74th minute to put her team on the brink of victory.
Edo Queens refused to give up, with Oluebube Umejiaku scoring a stoppage-time equaliser in the 94th minute to force a penalty shootout. The Nigerian side held their nerve during the shootout, converting four penalties while Ampem Darkoa managed just one.
The victory handed Edo Queens the WAFU-B championship and completed a remarkable comeback in the regional final. Edo Queens have also secured qualification for the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
