A coalition of European Union and United States-based Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) has endorsed Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji as the most peaceful and popular candidate in the upcoming Anambra State governorship elections.
During a press conference held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, the NGOs revealed their findings after conducting an extensive evaluation of the political climate in Anambra State.
Their assessment was based on factors such as commitment to peaceful elections, track record of service and leadership, public perception and grassroots support, ethical campaign practices, and commitment to democracy and rule of law.
According to the NGOs, Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji emerged as the candidate with the highest public acceptability and commitment to peaceful elections. His comprehensive manifesto focuses on economic revitalization, security enhancement, infrastructural development, and youth empowerment.
“We are impressed by Hon. Umeoji’s commitment to peaceful elections and his vision for a better Anambra State,” said Friedrich Guntler, representative of the EU and US NGOs. “We believe that he has the potential to bring positive change to the state and improve the lives of its citizens.”
The NGOs expressed concerns about electoral malpractices and violence, urging stakeholders to ensure a free and fair electoral process. They called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold transparency and resist external pressure that could compromise the integrity of the elections.
“We are worried about the potential for electoral violence and malpractices in Anambra State,” Guntler said. “We urge all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the elections are peaceful, free, and fair.”
The NGOs also called on the security agencies to act impartially and protect voters from intimidation and violence.
“We urge the security agencies to remain neutral and ensure that voters are able to exercise their franchise without fear of intimidation or violence,” Guntler said.
The press conference was attended by distinguished members of the press, esteemed stakeholders, and representatives of the NGOs.
