Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested a suspected ammunition supplier believed to be working for bandit groups terrorising parts of Zamfara State.
The suspect, 32-year-old Ahmed Abubakar, originally from Gusau but residing in Anguwan Dodo, Gwagwalada, was picked up by the Command’s Tactical Team following what police described as credible intelligence.
According to investigators, Abubakar had allegedly been in communication with an associate, Yusuf Mohammed, as they tried to secure 1,000 rounds of ammunition intended for delivery to armed bandit groups in Zamfara. Police say the plot runs deeper, pointing to a more senior figure still on the run.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was in contact with an associate… with the intention of procuring 1,000 rounds of ammunition to be supplied to bandits in Zamfara State,” the police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh said in a statement on Wednesday.
SP Adeh said further probing reportedly showed that Abubakar was acting on the instructions of his uncle, Ahmed Yakubu, believed to be a major accomplice and currently at large.
FCT Police PRO alleged Yakubu sent his nephew to purchase and move the ammunition to criminal networks active in their Zamfara community.
She said the suspect is now in custody while authorities intensify efforts to track down the fleeing accomplice and dismantle the supply chain behind the illicit weapons movement.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to public safety, SP Adeh urged residents to remain vigilant and volunteer useful information.
“The FCT Police Command remains resolute in its mission to rid the Territory of crime and ensure the safety of residents,” she said, encouraging the public to report suspicious activities through the designated emergency lines: 0803 200 3913, 0806 158 1938, and 0902 222 2352.
