A coalition of civil society organizations, support groups, and professionals has come out in defense of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, dismissing recent sexual harassment allegations against him as “false” and “politically motivated.”
The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria (COCSON), Tinubu/Shettima Support Movement (TSSM), and Nigerian Professionals in Diaspora (NPID) held a joint press conference on Wednesday in Abuja to address the allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The groups questioned the timing and credibility of the allegations, pointing out that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has a history of making similar unsubstantiated claims against prominent figures.
They also criticized the media for amplifying the allegations without verifying the facts, calling for a more responsible and balanced approach to reporting.
The coalition expressed its full support for Senate President Akpabio, describing him as a man of integrity who has never been involved in any form of sexual misconduct.
“We demand a full-scale investigation into these false allegations and call on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to provide concrete evidence or face legal consequences for defamation,” the coalition stated.
The groups also urged Nigerians to reject the culture of media trials and character assassination, and to demand facts and evidence before jumping to conclusions.
