Civil Groups Slam Tenant Harassment, Demand Accountability in Tinubu Name-Dropping Scandal

President Bola Tinubu

In a powerful stand against injustice, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria (COCSON) and the Bloggers and Vloggers, Content Creators Association in Nigeria (BAVCCA) have united to condemn the unlawful harassment of innocent tenants, as highlighted in a viral video circulating on July 2, 2025.

The organizations are calling for an end to the abuse of court processes, tenant intimidation, and the shameless misuse of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s name by perpetrators seeking to evade accountability.

The tenants, caught in a web of illegal enforcement tactics orchestrated by landlords, hired thugs, and compromised legal actors, have faced unwarranted threats and chaos despite having no involvement in any legal wrongdoing.

The issue stems from a long-standing legal dispute, as COCSON and BAVCCA revealed: “The case has been in court since 2015 following an action by AMCON against Maina Ventures over an alleged loan by Maina Court from First City Monument Bank, FCMB. Early last year, AMCON, through one Taofeeq Salma-led team of police and thugs with an ex-parte order, claimed the property was sold to his client.”

This revelation underscores the complexity and misuse of legal processes to oppress innocent tenants.

Even more alarming is the perpetrators’ audacious claim of being “untouchable” due to alleged connections to President Tinubu—a claim COCSON and BAVCCA have vehemently debunked, emphasizing the President’s commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

In a bold move, the groups, in a joint statement on Wednesday, demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible, including landlords and lawyers abusing the judicial system by filing the same matter across multiple courts.

They also called for a thorough investigation into conflicting court orders, sanctions for any complicit judicial or police officers, and compensation for the affected tenants.

Additionally, they urged the Presidency to publicly dissociate President Tinubu from these criminal acts.

The organizations praised the leadership of Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for his efforts to uphold the law and urged him to ensure swift action to prevent further injustice.

“Nobody is above the law,” declared Comrade Ibrahim Musa of COCSON, while Ms. Chinwe Daramola of BAVCCA emphasized that civil society will relentlessly pursue justice until the truth prevails.
