Gunmen kill 12 in Jos community as Plateau govt imposes curfew

No fewer than 12 persons have been killed after suspected gunmen attacked Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, reportedly left several others injured, sparking tension in the area.

According to reports, the attackers opened fire on residents at about 8 p.m., shooting indiscriminately at a popular gathering spot in the community. The assailants were suspected to be cultists.

Sources said victims who sustained injuries were evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while security operatives were deployed to restore calm.

In response to the attack, the Plateau State Government announced the imposition of a 48-hour curfew across Jos North Local Government Area. The restriction took effect from midnight of March 29 and is expected to remain in place until April 1, 2026, to allow security agencies carry out operations and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Authorities said the curfew was aimed at restoring peace in the area following the fresh outbreak of violence.

Security agencies have yet to officially confirm arrests, but residents said patrols have been intensified across affected communities.

The latest incident adds to concerns over recurring violence in parts of Plateau State, with residents calling for stronger security presence to protect lives and property.
