A heavy rainfall accompanied by a strong windstorm on Monday destroyed the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja, a facility recently commissioned by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
The storm, which struck a few hours earlier, also caused minor damage to the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and affected some buildings within the surrounding area.
According to preliminary reports, no casualties were recorded and no vehicles were damaged during the incident.
To forestall any breakdown of law and order and ensure the free flow of traffic, the FCT Minister has ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to the affected location.
Additionally, authorities have commenced plans for urgent repairs of the damaged infrastructure.
In a statement issued on Monday, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, confirmed the development and the minister’s directive for swift intervention.
“To prevent breakdown of law and order, as well as free flow of traffic, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed that security men be deployed to the scene, while immediate action will be taken towards fixing the damages caused by the windstorm.”
Officials said further assessments of the extent of damage are ongoing, while emergency response teams have been mobilised to restore normalcy in the area.
The Kugbo Bus Terminal is one of the transport infrastructure projects recently delivered by the FCT Administration to improve urban mobility and ease congestion within the Federal Capital Territory.
