Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday held a high-level meeting with the President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, at the State House in Freetown, where both leaders discussed regional peace, democratic governance and cooperation within West Africa.
Jonathan disclosed details of the visit in a post shared on his official X handle, explaining that he visited President Bio in his capacity as Special Envoy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and Chairman of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF).
According to the former Nigerian leader, the engagement centred on issues affecting stability and development across the sub-region.
“Today, I paid a special visit to His Excellency President @julius_maadabio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, at the State House in Freetown,” Jonathan stated.
“I visited in my capacity as Special Envoy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and as Chairman of the W
est African Elders Forum (@TheWAEF).”
He further noted that both leaders exchanged views on matters of regional importance.
“Our discussions focused on issues of mutual interest and matters relating to peace, stability, democratic governance, and regional cooperation within the West African sub-region,” he added.
Jonathan also expressed appreciation to President Bio for the reception accorded to him during the visit.
“I deeply appreciate President Bio for the warm reception, gracious hospitality, and conviviality extended to me during our fruitful engagements,” he said.
The visit comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts by regional leaders and stakeholders to strengthen democratic institutions, peacebuilding initiatives and collective security across West Africa under the ECOWAS framework.
