Lagos and Ogun State governments have announced that British-Nigerian boxing star, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from hospital following the fatal road accident of December 29, 2025, which claimed the lives of two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami.
This is contained in a statement jointly signed on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, and Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Ogun State, Kayode Akinmade.
According to the statement, both state governments again expressed deep sympathy with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and heartbreaking.
They prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and asked God to grant their families and loved ones the strength to bear the painful loss.
The statement disclosed that Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, late Thursday afternoon after doctors certified him clinically fit. However, it noted that the boxer remains emotionally devastated by the loss of his two close friends and will continue his recovery at home.
Earlier in the day, Anthony Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their last respects as preparations were underway for the repatriation of the bodies, which was scheduled for later in the evening.
The statement also conveyed the appreciation of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to members of the public for the outpouring of concern, prayers, and solidarity shown since the unfortunate incident.
Special gratitude was extended to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for what the governments described as his fatherly support throughout the process.
In addition, the governments commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality of care in attending to Anthony Joshua and others who sustained injuries in the accident.
