A businessman, Mallam Umar Tasiu, was allegedly flogged to d3ath by his former in-laws in Minna, Niger State.
A neighbour told Daily Trust on condition of anonymity that the Al Azhar University, Egypt graduate had gone to see his children who live with his ex-wife at her father’s house.
“He went to see his two kids who are staying with his former wife in her father’s house. They had separated but the children are staying with their mother. He went to see them and his former in-laws who didn’t want him to come to their house tied and whipped him until he died in their house. His corpse was brought back to his house on Saturday night and we buried him on Sunday at about 10am,” the source said.
Spokesperson of the state Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, who confirmed the incident said the victim died after he was taken to the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, due to injuries he sustained from whipping by hoodlums.
“On 22/10/2023 at about 0800hrs, a case of suspected culpable homicide was reported at the GRA Division; that on 21/10/2023 at about 2300hrs, one Umar Tasiu of Angwan Daji was attacked by hoodlums in Minna and he was inflicted with severe injuries. He was rushed to the IBB Hospital, Minna, where he gave up the ghost. Case is under investigation and effort is ongoing to arrest the suspects,” the PPRO added.
A friend of the deceased, Ahmad Sallah, in a Facebook post said the former in-laws disapproved of the marriage between their daughter and Umar due to different religious beliefs.
“My Mallam Umar was beaten to death in his ex-father-in-law’s house. Alaramma mallam Umar tasi’u, the son of late alh tasiu mai yadi. Alaramma was a businessman, a Hafiz, a muhaddith, he got married after completing his degree at Al Azhar University Egypt,” he wrote.
“It seems that he faced a difficult situation with his ex-father-in-law, which ultimately led to his untimely death. Alaramma Mallam Umar was a well-rounded individual, being a businessman, a Hafiz, and a muhaddith. He completed his degree at Al Azhar University in Egypt before getting married.
“It appears that his wife’s family had different religious beliefs, with her father being an Izala and him being Tariqah Muslim. Despite her father’s disapproval, they got married and had three children together
“Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties in Alaramma’s business, his wife’s father decided to separate them and took the matter to court, accusing Alaramma of teaching his daughter the Tariqah.
“However, Alaramma successfully defended himself in court using his extensive knowledge. Despite winning the case, his wife’s father forcefully took her away from him, leading to their divorce.
“Years later, the father still took the children away from Alaramma. Tragically, during an attempt to retrieve his children from the ex-father-in-law, they called him a thief and was attacked/beaten to death. We offer our condolences and pray that Allah forgives Alaramma Mallam Umar. Know who to take your wife from!.”
