Mutfwang briefs President Tinubu on Jos attack, security measures

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, on Wednesday met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he briefed the President on the recent Palm Sunday night attack in Angwan Rukuba community of Jos North Local Government Area and the steps taken to restore calm.

Governor Mutfwang disclosed this in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, noting that the visit was aimed at updating the President on developments following the incident and the proactive actions already implemented by the state government.

According to the governor, the situation, though unfortunate, has now been brought under control.

“Today, I visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to brief him on the Palm Sunday night attack in the Angwan Rukuba community of Jos North Local Government Area, and to update him on the proactive measures we have taken to address the situation. The incident was deeply unfortunate, but we thank God that the situation has now been brought under control,” Mutfwang said.

He explained that immediately after the attack, the state government took decisive measures to prevent further escalation and ensure public safety.

“In response to the attack, we swiftly implemented several proactive steps, including the imposition of a 48-hour curfew, the reinforcement of the existing ban on motorcycle operations within the Greater Jos Master Plan, and the immediate convening of a State Security Council meeting to review and strengthen our security framework to prevent further escalation,” he added.

Governor Mutfwang further revealed that the curfew was partially relaxed to allow residents attend to essential activities, but some individuals attempted to take advantage of the situation.

“This morning, we relaxed the curfew from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to allow residents attend to essential activities. Regrettably, some miscreants took advantage of this window to engage in looting and attempt to disrupt the peace. I am, however, pleased to report that our security forces responded promptly and restored order without delay,” he stated.

The governor also disclosed that President Tinubu expressed support for the measures taken by the state government and offered additional guidance on achieving lasting peace.

“The President expressed his support for the decisive measures we have put in place to contain the situation and prevent a recurrence of such unfortunate incidents. He also offered valuable counsel on strategies to achieve lasting peace in the state and extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims and the people of Plateau State,” he noted.

Governor Mutfwang further revealed that the President has scheduled an emergency visit to Plateau State as part of efforts to demonstrate solidarity with residents affected by the incident.

“Deeply moved by the situation, the President has graciously adjusted his schedule to undertake an emergency visit to Plateau State as a demonstration of his concern, solidarity, and commitment to the people. He has also approved additional measures to be implemented in collaboration with security agencies to further stabilize the situation,” the governor said.

The development comes amid renewed efforts by the Plateau State Government and security agencies to maintain peace and prevent further violence in affected communities.
