Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced an investigation into reports of alleged civilian casualties following an airstrike conducted in Jilli community on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the service is treating the allegations with seriousness and empathy.
According to the statement, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) has ordered the immediate deployment of a fact-finding team to the area.
“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken note of reports alleging that an air strike conducted on Saturday, 11 April 2026, may have affected a local market in Jilli, resulting in civilian casualties,” the statement read.
The Air Force stressed that safeguarding civilian lives remains a core operational priority and assured that all allegations would be thoroughly investigated.
“The Service treats all reports of possible civilian harm with the utmost seriousness and empathy, as the protection of innocent lives remains central to all NAF operations,” Ejodame stated.
He further disclosed that the Chief of the Air Staff has directed the activation of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to conduct an on-the-ground assessment.
“In line with this commitment, the CAS has directed an immediate activation of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to immediately proceed to the location on a fact-finding mission on the allegation.”
The Nigerian Air Force reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability while working with relevant authorities and affected communities to determine what transpired.
“The NAF remains firmly committed to professionalism, accountability, and transparency in the conduct of its missions, and will work closely with relevant authorities and community representatives to establish the facts,” the statement added.
While the investigation continues, the Air Force urged members of the public and media organizations to avoid speculation.
“While this process is ongoing, the Service respectfully urges the public and the media to refrain from speculation and allow the review to proceed without prejudice.”
The Air Force also reassured Nigerians of its continued commitment to protecting both national security and civilian lives.
“The Nigerian Air Force reassures all citizens of its steadfast resolve to protect both national security and civilian lives, while ensuring that every credible concern is addressed with the diligence and seriousness it deserves.”
The outcome of the investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the air operation and address concerns raised by affected communities.
