The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned what it described as an unprovoked attack on its members during a peaceful grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, OSA Director, Esq., the party alleged that its members were attacked by what it described as “state-sponsored thugs” while exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
The NDC said the repeated attacks on its members were a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and freedom of association, insisting that every registered political party has the right to organise and participate in the democratic process without intimidation.
The party also expressed concern over what it called the failure of security agencies to respond decisively to attacks against opposition members in Enugu and other parts of the South-East.
According to the statement, the party had previously suffered similar attacks in Imo State during a town hall meeting and consultation involving its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeogocha.
The NDC further alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu was unsettled by the party’s growing support ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that no amount of intimidation would stop its political activities.
It warned that attempts to instill fear among its members had failed, adding that the incident would instead strengthen the party’s resolve to mobilise support for its candidates.
The party called on security agencies to immediately investigate the attack, arrest those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable, including alleged sponsors, is brought to justice.
The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful political participation, saying it would continue to organise, mobilise and defend the democratic space despite the alleged attacks.
