Nigeria, Rwanda Deepen Military Ties as COAS Pushes Modern Training, Cadet Exchange

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for stronger military training and closer defence cooperation between Nigeria and Rwanda.

He made the call during a visit to the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako on Tuesday as part of his official visit to the country.

The Army Chief said modern security threats require well-trained and highly adaptable military officers.

He stressed that professional military education is essential for building a stronger and more effective armed force.

Lieutenant General Shaibu praised the Academy for its discipline, high training standards and impressive Special Forces demonstration.

He urged the Academy to prepare for the arrival of the first group of Nigerian officer cadets under the proposed exchange programme.

The Army Chief said Nigeria and Rwanda should share their experiences in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency to improve military operations.

A representative of the Academy’s Commandant, Brigadier General Bukenya, said the institution trains officers in leadership, military tactics, logistics and peace support operations.

He welcomed the planned partnership and reaffirmed the Academy’s commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with Nigeria.

The visit reflects the Nigerian Army’s determination to improve military training, strengthen international partnerships and prepare officers for modern security challenges.
