Nigeria reaffirmed its strong diplomatic and military ties with the Republic of Benin on Saturday as it joined the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration in Cotonou, where the Nigerian Army’s silent drill team delivered a standout performance that drew widespread applause.
The ceremony, held at the iconic Amazone in Cotonou, brought together government officials, diplomats, military officers and thousands of spectators to celebrate Benin’s independence.
Leading the Nigerian delegation was the Commander of 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi.
The contingent impressed guests with a crisp march past in both slow and quick time, displaying remarkable discipline, coordination and precision.
The biggest attraction, however, was the Nigerian Army’s silent drill display.
The team thrilled the audience with an expertly choreographed routine that showcased exceptional weapon handling, flawless synchronisation and military professionalism, earning a prolonged standing ovation from the crowd.
President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, applauded the performance alongside other dignitaries present at the ceremony.
Also representing Nigeria were the country’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Mopelola Adeola Ibrahim, the Nigerian Defence Attaché to Benin, Colonel S.A. Yahaya, senior military officers, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of friendly nations.
Nigeria said its participation reflected the enduring relationship between both countries and highlighted its commitment to strengthening military diplomacy, regional cooperation and collective security across West Africa.
The display also reinforced the Nigerian Army’s reputation for professionalism while celebrating the deep historical and cultural ties shared by Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 9 Brigade, Major Akinola Ajibola, highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s participation, describing it as another demonstration of the close friendship, mutual respect and regional solidarity between the two neighbouring countries.
