The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 51-year-old man for allegedly raping a 14-year old girl in Kwara State..
The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Umar Mohammed told newsmen on Wednesday in Ilorin that the 14-year old reported on Feb. 19 that the man had been assaulting her sexually since November 2023.
He said the victim happens to be a cousin of the suspect’s wife and had been residing with the couple since she was 11 years old.
“The victim reported that the suspect had been assaulting her sexually since November 2023, particularly on Sundays when there were no other persons at home.
“She also stated that the suspect threatened to harm her if she ever disclosed the illicit relationship to anyone,’’ Mohammed said.
He added that upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and would be charged in court at the conclusion of investigation.
The commandant expressed dismay at the alarming increase in rape cases and in the defilement of minors.
He emphasised that perpetrators of the heinous act would face severe consequences of their actions.
“Parents and guardians should be vigilant and ensure their children are always in close proximity.
“It is important for parents to assess the environment where their children will feel comfortable to discuss any issue they may encounter with strangers, friends or close relatives,’’ he said.
