Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has fixed March 28 and 29, 2026, for its National Convention in Abuja.
The decision was taken at the 105th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, held on Monday, February 2, 2026, in Abuja, according to a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting.
The communiqué was jointly signed by the National Chairman, National Caretaker Working Committee, Hon. Abdulrahman Muhammed and National Secretary, National Caretaker Working Committee, Sen. Samuel N. Anyanwu
After what the party described as “extensive deliberations on the state of the Party, the political environment, recent judicial developments, and preparations for forthcoming internal processes,” NEC unanimously reaffirmed all resolutions reached at the Emergency 104th NEC meeting held on December 7, 2025.
The committee emphasized that all actions arising from the earlier meeting “remain binding, lawful, and operative,” having been taken in strict compliance with the PDP Constitution (as amended), the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and relevant judicial pronouncements.
NEC also reaffirmed its confidence in the judiciary and welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which upheld the legality of the party’s leadership structure.
According to the communiqué, the court judgment “directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the duly constituted National Caretaker Committee of the PDP in line with the law.”
The committee resolved that all party organs and members must continue to act in obedience to subsisting court judgments, while urging INEC and other relevant institutions to fully comply with the ruling in the interest of democracy and constitutional order.
NEC once again reaffirmed the legitimacy and authority of the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee, with Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu as Secretary.
The committee stressed that the caretaker body “remains the only lawful national administrative organ of the Party, fully empowered to act as the National Working Committee (NWC) pending the conduct of the National Convention.”
As part of preparations for a return to an elected leadership, NEC approved the following nationwide congress timetable: Ward Congresses: February, Local Government Congresses: February and State Congresses: March
The National Caretaker Committee was directed to issue detailed guidelines and modalities for the congresses in line with the PDP Constitution, INEC regulations, and existing judicial directives.
NEC further confirmed March 28 and 29, 2026, as the dates for the PDP National Convention in Abuja, where members of the National Working Committee and other statutory organs of the party will be elected.
The committee also approved the extension of the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee and other affected state and zonal caretaker committees pending the conduct of the convention and congresses.
NEC mandated the caretaker leadership to immediately activate convention sub-committees and begin full logistical, administrative, and consultative preparations to ensure what it described as “a transparent, inclusive, and credible Convention.”
In a call for unity, NEC urged party members at all levels to remain disciplined and loyal, warning against actions capable of undermining internal cohesion.
The committee reaffirmed that the PDP remains committed to rebuilding “a strong, disciplined, democratic, and electorally competitive Party capable of providing credible leadership and governance to Nigerians.”
