PDP to FG: 2026 Must Be a Turning Point, Not Another Year of Broken Promises

Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) has urged the Federal Government to make 2026 a decisive break from years of insecurity, economic hardship and declining public trust, insisting that the protection of lives and property must remain the state’s primary constitutional responsibility.

In a New Year message to Nigerians, the party n a statement by National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Comrade Ini Ememobon, extended goodwill to citizens but noted that the country is entering 2026 amid persistent challenges that continue to threaten livelihoods, national security and democratic stability.

The PDP stressed that the new year should not become “another chapter of broken promises,” calling instead for firm, people-centred leadership that directly addresses the everyday realities faced by millions of Nigerians. According to the party, insecurity, economic strain and uncertainty have become the “contemporary lived experience” of many households and must be urgently tackled.

The opposition further warned that governance must be driven by the interests of Nigerians rather than partisan calculations or political survival. It reminded those in authority that public office is a service mandate, not a licence to rule, and urged leaders to exercise power with humility, accountability and strict adherence to the rule of law.

The party also called on key democratic institutions — including the judiciary, the electoral umpire and security agencies — to uphold their responsibilities without yielding to pressure, inducement or fear. It cautioned that democracy cannot endure where justice is compromised, institutions are commodified, and impunity is allowed to flourish.

Reaffirming its role as an opposition force, the PDP pledged continued solidarity with Nigerians in the pursuit of an egalitarian society, where opportunities and public resources are distributed fairly and not determined by party affiliation or closeness to power.

The party vowed to keep speaking truth to power, holding the government accountable and standing with citizens until governance truly reflects the will, welfare and aspirations of the people.
