Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi has expressed sorrow over the death of Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, the Sardauna of Sokoto, describing his passing as a significant loss to the nation.
In a condolence message shared on Monday, Obi paid tribute to the late statesman, who served Nigeria in several capacities, including as Minister of Finance and diplomat.
“I am saddened by the passing of Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, the Sardauna of Sokoto, former Minister of Finance, and diplomat who served Nigeria in various capacities,” Obi said.
He noted that the deceased would be remembered for his commitment to public service and his contributions to both Nigeria and the Sokoto Sultanate.
“He will be remembered for his years of public service and his role as the Sardauna of Sokoto. His contributions to the nation and the Sokoto Sultanate will remain part of his legacy,” he added.
Obi also extended his condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, the Sultanate, and the bereaved family.
“On behalf of my family and myself, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Sokoto State, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, the Sultanate of Sokoto, the royal family, and all who mourn his passing.”
He concluded with prayers for the repose of the late elder statesman and strength for those mourning him.
“May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort the bereaved with strength and fortitude in this difficult time.”
