Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for transparency and accountability in the allocation of the increased Budget of Restoration, which has risen to ₦54 trillion due to increased revenue.
Obi expressed concern that while the sources of the revenue were detailed, there was no corresponding breakdown of expenditures to justify the increase.
He emphasized that Nigerians have the right to know how their resources are being allocated to ensure judicious spending on critical areas such as education, healthcare, security, and poverty alleviation.
Furthermore, Obi noted that Nigerians are still awaiting a detailed account of the execution and expenditures of the Renewed Hope budget passed in December 2023.
He urged the National Assembly to obtain and make public the full details of the 2024 budget to ensure transparency and accountability.
As the country prepares to pass the Budget of Restoration for 2025, Obi stressed the importance of upholding openness, accountability, and the welfare of the Nigerian people. He reiterated that transparency is crucial for ensuring accountability, learning from past budgets, and making informed decisions for the nation’s progress.
