Police arrest 2 gunrunners, recover machine gun, 1300 rounds of ammunition

The Nigeria Police Force has recorded another significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat illegal arms trafficking and other forms of violent crime across the country.

Force Public Relation Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who disclosed this in a statement on. Monday, said the Katsina State Command operatives intercepted two gun runners along the Ingawa–Karkarku village road, Katsina State.

DCP Adejobi, who identified the suspects as Abdussalam, 25 and Aminu 23, both male from Safana Local Government Area, Katsina State, said they were apprehended following credible intelligence on their activities.

He said a search on their operational vehicle, a blue-coloured Volkswagen Golf with Reg No RSH-528 BV, led to the recovery of the following exhibits concealed inside the vehicle: one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1,063 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition, and 232 rounds of 7.62x69mm PKT ammunition.

The Force spokesman said preliminary investigations indicate that the illegal arms and ammunition were taken from Hadejia in Jigawa State to Safana LGA in Katsina State for distribution to notorious criminal elements.

“The suspects have been taken to police custody for an in-depth investigation to uncover the source, destination network, and possible affiliations of the recovered arms”, he said.

He quoted the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, as commending the gallantry and swift response of the operatives and encourages them to sustain the tempo.

The IGP reiterated the commitment of the Force to dismantling all forms of organized criminal networks operating across the country. He urges members of the public to continue to support the Force with timely and credible information that can aid in securing lives and property.
