The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engr. Babachir Lawal, into its fold, in what the party described as a move to strengthen its leadership and national structure.
The former SGF was received by the party’s national leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other senior officials of the NDC.
Dickson, who announced Lawal’s arrival, described him as a respected elder statesman with valuable experience and a wide political network that could contribute to the growth of the party.
In a statement shared after the meeting, Dickson said: “Today, in the company of members of the National Working Committee and other NDC officials, it was a pleasure to receive and welcome respected elderstatesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir Lawal, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).”
The NDC leader said he appreciated Lawal for choosing to identify with the party and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute meaningfully to its development.
He added: “In my remarks, I thanked him, on behalf of the National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee, for believing in our party.”
Dickson further disclosed that Lawal would play a key role in coordinating party activities and providing leadership support in the North-East and North-Central regions.
According to him, “I requested him to provide leadership and support in coordinating, guiding and strengthening the party in the North-East and the North Central Zone, as well as provide leadership and support for all our candidates, counting on his experience, leadership and extensive network to further strengthen the party.”
He said the party would continue to welcome experienced Nigerians who share its commitment to democracy, good governance and national development.
Dickson also formally welcomed the former SGF to the party, saying: “Once again I warmly welcome Engr. Babachir Lawal to the NDC and look forward to working with him and other committed Nigerians as we continue to strengthen our party and advance the cause of multiparty democracy and good governance in our country.”
