Alexia Putellas has won the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or, claiming the prestigious award for the third time in her career.
The Spanish midfielder received the honour at the Ballon d’Or ceremony held in London on Monday.
She previously won the award in 2021 and 2022 after leading Barcelona to several major titles.
Her career was interrupted by a serious knee injury before the 2022 European Championship.
The injury kept her out for months and slowed her rise in women’s football.
Putellas returned to help Spain win the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
However, teammate Aitana Bonmatí became the world’s top player and won the Ballon d’Or from 2023 to 2025.
After Bonmatí suffered a leg injury, Putellas stepped up once again for Barcelona.
She inspired the Spanish club to regain the UEFA Women’s Champions League title last season.
Speaking after her recovery, Putellas said she now enjoys every moment because of what she went through during her injury.
She also said winning the Ballon d’Or again feels even more special than before.
After leaving Barcelona, the 32-year-old joined London City Lionesses for a fresh challenge in England.
She said the move has given her the opportunity to experience a new culture, language and football environment.
Putellas has already made a big impact, with the Lionesses competing near the top of the Women’s Super League table.
She will now hope to build on her success in England while helping Spain defend the FIFA Women’s World Cup title next year.
