Qatar’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey came to a disappointing end on Wednesday after a 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, a result that confirmed Switzerland and Canada as the two teams progressing from Group B into the Round of 32.
Needing a positive result to keep their hopes alive, Qatar fell behind in the 29th minute when Kerim Alajbegović fired Bosnia in front. The Europeans doubled their advantage before the break, leaving the Asian champions with a mountain to climb.
Qatar captain Hassan Al-Haydos responded in the 42nd minute to reduce the deficit and briefly revive his side’s hopes, but Bosnia regained full control after the restart. Mahmić struck in the second half to restore the two-goal cushion and seal a 3-1 victory for Bosnia, while confirming Qatar’s elimination from the tournament.
The result completed a dramatic final day in Group B, where Switzerland secured top spot with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Canada.
After a cagey first half, the Swiss struck almost immediately after the restart as Ruben Vargas found the net just 40 seconds into the second half. Switzerland doubled their advantage in the 57th minute through Johan Manzambi, putting themselves firmly in command.
Canada refused to go down without a fight and pulled one back in the 76th minute through substitute Promise David, who made an instant impact after coming off the bench. The hosts pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Switzerland held firm to claim all three points.
Switzerland finished top of Group B after collecting seven points from three matches, while Canada advanced as runners-up with four points. Qatar’s defeat confirmed their elimination from the tournament, ending their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
