Rivers: NLC says financial autonomy to LGs good omen

NLC President, Joe Ajaero

The Chairman, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Rivers State, Mr Alex Agwanwor, has described the Supreme Court decision granting financial autonomy to local government councils as a good omen.

Agwanwor made the statement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

He said it was a welcome development that local government councils in the country would now access resources directly from the centre.

“As a union, we have been campaigning for this to happen. This is irrespective of the abuse of office by council chairmen.

“Our concern is the welfare of workers and Nigerians generally. We shall always stand against anti-people policies in the country,” he said.

The labour leader stated that Nigerians would watch patiently to see how the financial autonomy to councils would lead to a better quality of life for the people.

Agwanwor, said that measures should be taken to ensure that politicians did not seize the opportunity of direct access to resources to embezzle public funds.

“We are watching to see how the autonomy will benefit the workers and the people at large,” he said.(NAN)
