Cristiano Ronaldo’s relationship with Portugal has hit a difficult moment, but the door to his return remains open.
The Portuguese Football Federation has provisionally suspended the 41-year-old captain while it investigates his decision to leave the national team camp.
The dispute followed Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway after Ronaldo remained an unused substitute.
Ronaldo later apologised to his teammates and accepted that the federation could punish him.
He also insisted that he still wants to play for his country.
Despite the suspension, federation president Pedro Proença says Portugal wants its captain back.
“The Federation, the coach Jorge Jesus and the players are all aligned: we want Cristiano Ronaldo back,” Proença said.
He added that Ronaldo is willing to return and expressed confidence that the football icon could rejoin the squad in November.
Portugal will face Denmark on November 14 and Wales three days later as preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup continue.
