Security agency uncovers 30 graves, shrine in Anambra hotel

A newly-established security outfit has uncovered over 30 graves, a shrine, and arms at a property operating under the guise of a hotel.

The discovery has sparked tension in the Oba community of Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The 30 graves were discovered in the hotel, known officially as Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites, but popularly referred to as La Cruise Hotel.

The building is located on Onitsha-Owerri Road.

The structure was demolished on Saturday after a tip-off and thorough intelligence gathering that led to the raid.

During the operation, authorities discovered graves partitioned in the basement, alongside military camouflage, weapons, and ammunition.

The security team and local government have not released further details about the findings.

A statement issued by the state government described the property as a hub for criminal activities, including kidnappings.

“The hotel had well-partitioned graves on the last floor along with a shrine,” the statement said.

Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent and ramifications of the activities at the site.

The government explained that the demolition was carried out under state security laws, which mandated that any building linked to criminal activities, such as kidnapping, should be destroyed.

The governor’s spokesperson noted that the decision was based on credible intelligence and aimed at deterring similar practices.

Some residents of the area in Anambra State have expressed mixed reactions following the discovery of the graves in the hotel.

Some called for deeper investigations into other establishments suspected of similar activities.

“I witnessed the demolition. This is beyond comprehension. God forbid such evil in our land!” one local exclaimed.

Another resident argued that the so-called graves might have been fish ponds.

Besides the discovery of the graves in the hotel, another operation took place on Saturday, targeting a brothel in Akwu-Ukwu Oba, also in the Idemili South area of Anambra State.

Security operatives arrested two suspected kidnappers and five other individuals.

The brothel, identified as a hideout for criminals, was demolished immediately under state security laws.

Security forces have vowed to continue their efforts to track down other suspects linked to the operations, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring safety and law enforcement in the region
