Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a planned power outage affecting parts of Akwa Ibom State following the commencement of maintenance work on the Uyo/Itu 132kV transmission line.
In a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company said the temporary outage is necessary to enable contractors carry out critical upgrade work aimed at improving power supply reliability.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to inform the public that a planned maintenance exercise is currently ongoing on the Uyo/Itu 132kV Transmission Line,” the statement read.
According to TCN, the maintenance exercise commenced on April 9, 2026, and will run for fourteen days, with work scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily for three days each week.
“The outage, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, will run for fourteen days, three days each week, commencing on 9th April 2026 at 2:05 p.m. This exercise is to enable TCN’s contractors string the Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) along the Uyo/Itu Transmission Line. On completion, this project will increase the line’s wheeling capacity, reduce frequent outages, and enhance system stability,” the statement added.
TCN further disclosed that contractors are already on-site carrying out the necessary technical work to ensure the project is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
“TCN’s contractors are presently onsite working on the line to ensure that bulk power supply is restored as quickly as possible,” the company noted.
As a result of the ongoing maintenance, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) will temporarily be unable to supply electricity to some customers in affected areas.
“Consequently, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) will be unable to off-take power supply to its customers in Uyo, Eket, Ekim, and Ibom Power during the specified outage period,” the statement said.
TCN apologised to electricity consumers for the inconvenience caused by the temporary disruption, while assuring that efforts are underway to complete the maintenance exercise within schedule.
“TCN apologises for the inconvenience this will cause electricity consumers in the affected areas and assures that every effort is being made to complete the exercise within the stipulated timeframe,” the statement concluded.
The upgrade is expected to strengthen power transmission capacity in the affected areas and improve electricity supply reliability upon completion.
