Tears as Sen. Akwashiki is laid to rest in Lafia

The Late Senator Godiya Akwashiki ( SDP- Nasarawa North), who died recently was on Saturday buried in his residence in Lafia, the State Capital

It would be recalled that Senator Akwashiki, died on Dec.31, 2025 in an Indian hospital at the age of 52 after a protracted illness.

Akwashiki was buried at about 1:50 p.m. in his family compound after the funeral Mass at St William Cathedral, Lafia.

Until his death, Akwashiki represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate on the platform of the SDP.

Speaking at the Funeral Mass, Gov Abdullahi Sule said that Akwashiki has touched so many lives, adding that he has dedicated his life to the service of God and humanity.

“We are here to pay our last respect to Sen. Godiya Akwashiki as death reminds us to be humble. Death also reminds us to actually love one another,” he said.

Sule prayed God to grant the family, Eggon Nation and the country at large to bear the irreparable lost.

” I pray that may God continue to lead the wife and children and the entire family,” he said

The Governor further preached forgiveness for the overall development of the country.

Also Speaking, the Senator President, Sen. Godswill Akpabio represented by Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Barau Jibrin said that Nigeria has lost a patriot while urging for prayers for the reposed of soul of Akwashiki.

“We have lost a patriot, brother, friend and colleague, who has done a lot for humanity and for the development of his Senatorial district and Nigeria at large,” he said. People has lost someone who really loved them” he said.

The Senate President prayed God to grant his family, Nasarawa North and Nigeria the fortitude to bear the irreparable lost.

On his Part, Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Dr Danladi Jatau said that iroko tree has fallen.

” The death of Sen. Godiya Akwashiki was painful but there is nothing that we can do as God gives life and takes at will. Let’s all pray for the reposed of his soul and May God grant all of us the fortitude to bear the irreparable lost” he said.

Justice Ahmed Ubangari Alaku ( rtd) the Aren Eggon, who spoke on behalf of the family and Eggon Nation said that Eggon Nation has lost a son who has impacted positively on the lives of so many Nigerians

Ubangari, who prayed God to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest, appreciated Gov. Sule for his immense contribution towards the success of the burial.

Eatlier, Dr Mathew Ishaya Audu, the Archbishop of Jos Diocese while presiding over the funeral Mass, urged believers to dedicate their lives to Jesus Christ

He said that Akwashiki had contributed immensely to the development of the church, humanity and the society in general.

Audu reminded politicians that leadership is a sacred trust not a business gain, as he prayed God to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest

Other dignitaries at the funeral Mass were Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Sen.Tanko Al-Makura, Chairman of the Governing Board of UBEC, Rep Jonathan Gaza, Mr Labaran Maku, former Minister of Information,

Others are Mr David Umbugadu, 2023 PDP Governorship Candidate, Nasarawa State, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, former Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, religious and traditional leaders, present and former state and National Assembly members among others, were also present to pay their last respects to the deceased.

Born in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, the late Senator was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023.

He previously served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
