Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has unveiled an ambitious plan to deliver one million public homes across Nigeria if elected president in 2027, promising what he described as a new era of inclusive and dignified housing for Nigerians.
In a statement shared on his X handle, Sowore said his administration would revive mass public housing on a scale never seen before, while rejecting policies that isolate low-income earners in poorly planned settlements.
According to him, the proposed housing model under an AAC-led government would focus on mixed-income communities designed to accommodate workers, students, families, and other members of society without discrimination.
“Under the Sowore administration, Nigeria will return fully to mass public housing, but this time, there will be no discriminatory ‘low-income housing’ that segregates the poor and working class,” he stated.
The former presidential candidate said the estates would go beyond ordinary housing projects and would include green spaces, schools, shopping malls, theatres, clinics, playgrounds, transport systems, and other community facilities.
“We will build mixed-income housing estates with green spaces, schools, malls, theatres, clinics, playgrounds, transport access, and community facilities built into them,” Sowore added.
He also accused members of the political elite of hijacking housing opportunities meant for ordinary Nigerians, alleging that public resources had long been diverted for private luxury.
“For too long, corrupt elites have hijacked land and houses meant for the people, using stolen public funds to build mansions they don’t even live in.
“That era will end,” he declared.
Sowore said the AAC government’s housing vision would prioritise affordability, environmental sustainability, and decent living conditions for citizens across the country.
“Our goal is to build 1 million decent public homes across Nigeria, affordable, dignified, environmentally responsible, and built for workers, families, students, and communities,” he said.
He concluded by declaring that “an unprecedented new era of public housing is coming,” as he pushed forward his #Sowore2027 campaign message ahead of the next general election.
