“This Experience Will Not Repeat” — Peter Obi Faults Fresh Killings After Tinubu’s Promise

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (Nigeria), Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over renewed killings across several states, less than 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assured Nigerians that such violence would not recur.

In a post shared on his X handle, Obi lamented that fresh attacks occurred shortly after the President made the pledge while addressing grieving residents in Plateau State on April 2, 2026.

Quoting the President’s remarks, Obi wrote: “This Experience Will Not Repeat Itself” — Another Presidential Promise fails in less than 24 Hours.

According to Obi, less than 24 hours after President Tinubu stood at the Jos airport and promised citizens, “I promise you that this experience will not repeat itself,” another brutal attack reportedly occurred in Nyamgo Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area, leading to the deaths of several innocent citizens.

The former Anambra governor further noted that the violence did not end there, as more communities across the country were subsequently attacked.

He stated that Nasarawa State was later plunged into grief when gunmen reportedly killed at least 11 people in the Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities, forcing residents to flee while homes were burnt and several families declared missing.

Obi also referenced reports from Zamfara State, where about 150 people were allegedly abducted from Kurfa Danya and Kurfan Magaji communities, describing it as one of the largest mass kidnappings in recent times.

He further noted that on the same day, terrorists reportedly stormed Chibok in Borno State, killing four security officers and burning homes.

The former presidential candidate also highlighted the Easter Sunday violence in Benue State, where over 17 Nigerians were reportedly killed, communities destroyed, and many residents still unaccounted for.

According to Obi, fresh violence was also recorded in Kaduna State, where several citizens were allegedly killed inside churches, while others were abducted in Ariko community of Kachia Local Government Area.

Reacting to the incidents, Obi stated: “Yet we were told, ‘This experience will not repeat itself.’ This represents a failure of leadership and responsibility, and sadly, Nigerians are paying for it with their lives.”

He added that the continued attacks suggest that perpetrators are emboldened by what he described as inaction.

“These attackers are not ghostly figures; our inaction emboldens them. How can a President make such a categorical promise and, mere hours later, the nation continues to count the dead across multiple states?” he questioned.

Obi stressed that the primary responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property, lamenting that Nigerians are increasingly being attacked in their homes, communities, and places of worship.

“The primary responsibility of any government is to protect lives and property; however, this responsibility is failing today. Nigerians are being slaughtered in their homes, in their communities, and in the very places they should feel safest,” he said.

Describing the situation as dire, Obi warned: “This is a national emergency. Nigeria is bleeding, and the situation is worsening and increasingly helpless.”

He concluded his message with a call for hope and reform, stating: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
